Richland County School District One Summer SOAR 2017 Camp – Open to ALL students in state and out!

Audience: 3rd – 8th graders
Using the mBot, Sphero, and LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 robots, participants will focus on physical computing by bringing robotics projects to life using computer programming. The hands-on activities and challenges serve multi-purpose: introduce and reinforce STEAM concepts and their many applications and fundamentals learned in the classroom and building 21st Century Skills through:

Cognitive, Language, Social and emotional development
Critical thinking
Collaboration

Participants will work individually and in a group setting to create a final project that will be presented during the field excursion at IT-oLogy, June 9th, 2017. Elementary students will use the mBot with Arduino and Scratch programs. The middle school students will use the LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 robots with the LEGO MINDSTORMS education program or the Sphero robots. The activities and challenges delivered throughout the camp will teach technology in a fun and engaging way which aligns with K-12 Computer Science Framework, content standards in ELA, Mathematics and Science, ITEEA standards in Technology Literacy, ISTE National Education Technology Standards, and overall preparation for South Carolina K-8 Computer Science requirement  beginning school year 2018- 2019 .

Behavior Policy: Each student is to participate and be respectful in class. There will be no texting, accessing personal email, or accessing non-class websites during class sessions. Participants may use cell phones, iPods, iPads, etc. during designated break times. We reserve the right to dismiss any student in response to inappropriate or unsafe behavior. There will be no refund for unused camp time if this occurs.
